DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM
Caravel Academy’s transportation department serves all of New Castle County, Kent County to Dover and part of Cecil County, MD. We have 13 daily runs serving over 350 students.
Our transportation staff strives to ensure that students are transported safely, and is committed to the professional training of its drivers. We are proud to say we travel approximately 250,000 miles a year keeping your children safe.
Besides our daily runs, we transport almost all school sporting events, field trips and after school activity students.
The fees for transportation are based on a mileage basis and range anywhere from $970.00 to $1420.00, with the second child fee of $500.00. Activity runs (after school activity buses) are $5.00 a night; unless you are a contracted rider then there is no fee.
Bus FAQ's
How do I request daily transportation to and/or from school?
We require a transportation contract and a bus rider information sheet be filled out when requesting transportation. The documents can be found online or requested through transportation or the finance office.
How early should my child be at the bus stop?
Students should plan to arrive at the bus stop approximately 10 minutes prior to the designated pickup time. The bus cannot wait for students who are late.
What if the bus is late?
Caravel strives to run on schedule every day, but traffic, break downs, weather and unforeseen incidents are responsible for delays both arriving at school in the morning and at home in the afternoon. State regulations require the bus drivers not use a cell phone at any time while driving (this includes hands free devices). You may contact the school for information but usually we don’t know until the driver gets in or can stop safely to notify us of any delays.
The bus goes right past my house, why can’t they stop there?
Bus stops are established at easily identified locations accessible to students throughout a geographic area. This assures student safety, bus safety and public safety. Each time a bus stops to pick up or drop off a student, rider time is increased due to stop sequence, loading or unloading, and accelerating back into traffic. Stopping at each residence along the route is time consuming and costly.
Why must I submit a note if my child is going home with another student?
The transportation department must receive and approve written requests for stop changes. This ensures that the driver is notified of who your child is going home with or where your child is to be taken.
What if I need my child to be dropped at a daycare or caregivers home on a short term basis?
Again, the transportation department must receive and approve written requests for stop changes. This must be given at least a day in advance to make sure that the bus travels in the area requested. If not then other arrangements must be made by the parent.
Every day, 25 million American students ride a school bus to and from school safely. In fact, children are nearly eight times safer riding on the school bus than with their own parents and guardians in cars. Moreover, the protective abilities of the school buses we use have never been higher, thanks to years of scientific research and testing.
But even one accident is too much. So it’s vitally important that you show and interest in, and emphasize the importance of, school bus safety with your child. As a parent/guardian, you can help preserve the safety of all students by going over the rules with your child/children.
