About Caravel

Robert C. Peoples – builder, teacher, father, friend, philanthropist – was the guiding force in bringing Caravel Academy from concept to realization.  His vision, dedication, financial support, and commitment to excellence provided the cornerstone on which Caravel Academy is built.

Mission Statement

Caravel Academy, a private college preparatory school, upholds traditional American values, such as honesty, integrity, respect for self and others, and good sportsmanship in all activities. Our mission is to inspire students to develop a love of learning and empower them to become productive, self-sufficient citizens through effective and challenging instruction, extracurricular activities and a wide range of experiences in a safe and supportive community.

Robert C. Peoples – builder, teacher, father, friend, philanthropist – was the guiding force in bringing Caravel Academy from concept to realization.  His vision, dedication, financial support, and commitment to excellence provided the cornerstone on which Caravel Academy is built.

In 1979, Mr. Peoples set out to establish a high quality private school to serve the needs of the families in the communities he had already built in the area.  As Caravel’s reputation for excellence grew, Mr. Peoples, along with his wife and co-founder Dorothy Peoples, was determined to make Caravel Academy one of the finest comprehensive, college preparatory academies in the East.

Today, Caravel Academy’s seventy-five acre campus includes outstanding facilities for students, families, and staff from preschool through twelfth grade as well as a fine academic program that is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.  Caravel students come not only from the surrounding areas stretching to Wilmington and Dover in Delaware, but also from the states of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

Under the continued guidance of Mrs. Dorothy M. Peoples, Board of Education president, and her three sons: Mr. Robert Peoples, Mr. Harrison Peoples, and Mr. Thomas Peoples; her daughter Mrs. Carol Manubay; and her son-in-law, Mr. Paul Manubay, the family has carried on the business and the school in a manner which they feel is true to the spirit of its founder’s principles.
1.    As our community’s most valuable asset, all children have a right to learn in a safe, nurturing, and loving environment.
2.    Lifelong learning is essential for success in a changing society.
3.    Education is the shared responsibility of Caravel Academy, governing authority, student, the family, government, and stakeholders.
4.    A core of common values and ethical conduct and an appreciation of diversity are fundamental to sustaining our society.
5.    The primary responsibility of education is to assist each child in discovering and reaching his or her potential.
6.    An effective educational institution and its organizations purposefully provide for self-renewal through flexibility and a willingness to change.
7.    Recognizing that children learn at different rates and in different ways, effective education develops the whole person intellectually, emotionally, socially, and physically.
8.    Effective education fosters honesty, good sportsmanship, and personal integrity.

Our students enjoy reaching for the best within themselves.  They can discover new horizons and set a course for a bright future.  As a college preparatory school, academics are our first priority; however, music, art, drama, sports, and service to school and community are integral parts of our school culture because they enrich a student’s mind and spirit and help them to discover their potential talents.

Parents are always welcome to contact staff regarding their child’s welfare and academic progress.  They are encouraged to participate in school activities and fund-raising projects.  Parents with young children enrolled in preschool and the lower  grades often participate in field trips, traditional events, and celebrations.  Parents whose children are enrolled in the Middle school or high school often participate in music fun-raisers sponsored by the Music Boosters.  Other activities are sponsored by the BUCS Association to support the athletics program, and family fun events for the whole school are sponsored by the Parents and Teachers of Caravel (PTC).  Members of the Parents Advisory committee are liaisons between parents and the Board of Education and administration.

The faculty is our pride and joy.  Along with our equally fine administrative and support staffs, they bring an extraordinary combination of experience, dedication, and professionalism to their students.  Their involvement with both students and parents goes far beyond what might normally be expected.  Teachers communicate with parents through personal meetings, email, telephone, and web-based student accounts.  This personalized education program makes Caravel a special place.
