Concert Band and Strings

This group is formed of beginning fourth grade instrumentalists. Students choose instruments to study in late September, then attend weekly lessons which are carefully scheduled to minimize time taken from any other particular academic area. In recent years, this group has been prepared to perform in the Winter Fine Arts Festival, the Spring Fine Arts Festival, and an instruments demonstration concert for Lower School classes with the Concert Band and Strings.
Fifth and Sixth grade musicians make up this ensemble. This group meets twice a week as an elective class and once a week during H-period to receive a grade. Students earn their grade through weekly homework assignments (practice cards), marking-period long assignments (scales, rudiments, and/or rhythms), and H-period rehearsal attendance. We continue building on skills learned in fourth grade. Expanded range, dynamic control, new meters (time signatures), and expressive playing are topics introduced at this level. This group performs at both the Winter and Spring Fine Arts Festivals and an instruments demonstration concert for Lower School classes with the Lower School Band and Strings.
The Concert Band and Strings also competes at a regional day trip through "Music in the Parks", an organization hosting vocal and instrumental competitions throughout the country. In recent years, we have traveled to Dorney Park and Hershey Park and have received ‘’Good’ and ‘Excellent’ ratings. Sixth grade members are also eligible to participate in the Middle School Jazz Band, and Fifth graders may participate by invitation.

Music Boosters
The Caravel Academy Music Boosters is an active organization that believes in the importance of music in the lives of all the students. Our organization supports all of the music programs within Caravel. Music touches every student at Caravel from preschool to high school in many different ways. If you've ever watched the students perform at our Fine Arts Festivals or in competition, you can understand why we provide our support. We help bring those performances to life so that each student can experience the pride of accomplishment that goes with a spectacular performance.
As students enter Middle and Upper School and continue their musical journey, they gain the experience of traveling for competitions. The Music Boosters organize and help fund these excursions. Fundraising plays an integral role in our efforts to aid students in achieving their dreams on a group and individual level. Caravel has an outstanding record of participation in All-State Band and Chorus Competitions with our support. Over the last few years, several students have been selected to perform at Carnegie Hall and a large number of students have been selected to honor choirs in Texas, Rhode Island, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Boston. The school has also received the Espirt de Corps award in recent years.
All of this is only possible with the help of our entire community through fundraising, which goes directly back to our children. None of it would be possible without dedicated volunteers. We would like to thank all of our volunteers who have donated their time and energy, which is truly a precious gift.
