Caravel Academy > Activities > Performance Arts

Performing arts programs at Caravel Academy include many activities such as Beginner Band, Chorus, Concert Band, Upper and Middle School Plays, Pep Band, Color Guard and Symphonic Band. Each of these activities include many talented students and teachers that not only enhance their talents as a group, but also enhance the overall spirit and attitude of the student body.

Beginner Band

Beginner Band teaches students (with some or no musical background) the fundamentals of playing an instrument.  Instruments that are taught are flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba, keyboard, percussion and drums.  With the band director's guidance students rent or purchase their own instrument, accessories and lesson books.  Lessons are held during the day in small groups.  Students will miss one academic class per week to attend lessons.   Beginner band also meets as a large group during H period two days per week starting in late October.  Any middle or upper school students can join!

Chorus

Middle School Chorus meets twice a week during H-period study hall. No auditions required for participation, though solos are offered during some performances to anyone who is interested. We perform at two Fine Arts Festivals, Graduation Ceremonies and other special assemblies. Our focus is fun and vocal experience and training.

The Upper School Chorus meets during homeroom. No auditions required, although solos are offered during some performances to those who are interested. We learn basic music reading skills, varied repertoire and choreography. We perform at two Fine Arts Festivals, Graduation Ceremonies and other special assemblies.

Concert and Symphonic Bands

Concert Band meets twice a week during H-period, with an additional small group lesson scheduled during one class period a week. Musicians are required to demonstrate a basic proficiency on their instruments. Members of the concert band will be introduced to a variety of styles at an intermediate level. Primarily composed of Middle School students, the band also provides opportunity to older students to perform on a second instrument or to develop leadership skills as a conductor.

Symphonic Band meets once a week during H-period, with additional small group lessons scheduled once a week during one class period. Musicians are admitted to the Symphonic Band by audition, and are required to maintain a high level of technical skill, as the music performed is quite advanced. The band is primarily Upper School students, however, Middle School musicians demonstrating exceptional skill will be considered. The Symphonic Band plays at a variety of school events including plays, Fine Arts Festivals, and Band Night.

School Plays

Each year, the Upper and Middle School students put together and perform at least one full length play. Any student who is interested may participate in either the cast or crew. Rehearsals are held after school three to four days a week, and the two month rehearsal period culminates in two evening performances which are open to the general public.
