Academic Clubs
Caravel
Academy offers a wide variety of academic clubs and teams to
accommodate any interest. For example, any student is
welcome to join the Academic Bowl, Math League, Model U.N., National Honor Society, Odyssey of the Mind, Science Olympiad, Yearbook,
and Youth in Government .
Academic Bowl
High school trivia buffs, math whizzes, and all around good
students who like the idea of showing off their knowledge in a
fast paced game show format should sign-up for academic bowl in
the fall. Meeting at lunch time, the team practices quick
responses to questions on a variety of topics. The team
competes against other high school teams on the Texaco Star
Academic Challenge, which appears on TV.

Math League
Upper school Math League is open to all students, but it helps
if a student is both good at and likes math. Most of the
time one likes to do something if he or she is successful at
it. The time requirements are limited to when the meets
occur, usually one in November, December, and January, and two in
February. Each school takes a turn at being the host school
and is responsible for supplying refreshments. The meets
usually run from 3:15 to 5:15 on a Monday.
Model U.N.
Caravel's Model United Nations program presents a unique
challenge to students interested in world politics and the
function of the United Nations. Students involved with
Model U.N. are expected to research political issues as they
relate to the country which they represent. Students are
then to present resolutions concerning the issues on the floor of
the mock session of the United Nations.
National Honor Society
Caravel Academy sponsors a chapter of the National Honor
Society (grades 10-12). Election to this prestigious
society is by a panel of faculty members appointed by the
Headmaster. Eligibility is according to the national
guidelines with an emphasis on high academic achievement.
To be considered, the Caravel candidate must have a 3.2 GPA, be
active in two extra-curricular activities, and have an exemplary
discipline record.
Odyssey of the Mind
In Odyssey of the Mind a team of seven members work together
for several months preparing a creative solution to a
problem. The members of each academic team will come to
know each other quite well as the time that they put into problem
solving rivals that of the time spent practicing by an athletic
team. Students who sign up for OM will need to work some
days after school, some weekends and holidays, and some lunch
periods.
Science Olympiad
Students interested in Science Olympiad need only enjoy
interscholastic competition. The state competition is held
at Delaware State University in the spring, and over 50 schools
participate. Students prepare throughout the year for a
series of 35 events that encourage learning in biology, earth
science, chemistry, physics, problem solving, and
technology. Although some events are based on individual
achievement, many involve teamwork, group planning, and
cooperation. Emphasis is on knowledge and skill attainment
through active, hands-on participation.
Yearbook
Upper school students may sign up for this full year
activity. Students who sign up should be prepared to work
hard in a most demanding and responsible position. The club
meets one day a week after school. No experience is
necessary, just the willingness to take the challenge to help
prepare the Caravel yearbook.
Youth in Government
Caravel's Youth in Government program provides students with a
unique opportunity to learn about the function of Delaware's
state legislature. Held in conjunction with the Brandywine
YMCA, our program is designed to give each student the
opportunity to research, draft, and present a bill before a mock
session of the state legislature. During the weekend
students have the run of Legislative Hall (under close
supervision) and the chance to discuss their ideas with
Delaware's politicians, often including the governor. Our
Youth in Government program is open to all upper school students
who have an interest in state government and a desire to make the
world a better place through legislation.
