LEGACY AWARD
The Caravel Alumni Association presented its “Legacy Award” to a graduate who has been an inspiration to the students, faculty, and administration at the 27th Commencement at Caravel Academy on June 3, 2009. The $1,000.00 EE Savings Bond was presented to Charnelle Bacon ’09 in recognition of her drive and commitment to being a cancer survivor.
Charnelle came to Caravel as an 8th grader in 2004. She proved to be an exceptional athlete, as a varsity starter on the basketball team. As an All-State player she ranked in the top 5 in her class in the nation and many of the top colleges in the country were recruiting her. Before her 10th grade year started, Charnelle was diagnosed with bone cancer in her left leg. She spent that school year in the hospital receiving chemotherapy treatments and eventually surgery. Throughout that long year, Charnelle’s determination and spirit allowed her to keep up with her school work and serve as an inspiration to her teammates and classmates.
Charnelle beat bone cancer and returned to school to finish her junior and senior years at Caravel. She has served as the vice president of the senior class while being an integral part of the basketball coaching staff. Charnelle played an essential part in the Relay for Life effort and she has even started designing her own line of clothing to benefit cancer research.
Charnelle was recognized with a standing ovation at the Commencement for being an inspiration to the entire Caravel community.
