George
E. Glynn, Jr.
An Accomplished EducatorA lifelong educator, Glynn came to Caravel in 1982 after retiring from thirty-one years of Delaware public school service, where he worked as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and then superintendent in the Marshallton, Stanton, and New Castle County School Districts. He taught at the elementary and secondary levels and administered at the building and district levels in urban and suburban schools. As superintendent, Glynn was responsible for more than 15,000 students in 4 high schools, 7 junior highs, and 16 elementaries; he supervised 900 teachers, an assistant superintendent, 4 directors, 37 principals and assistants, 7 supervisors, and support personnel. He successfully melded 4 districts into one and achieved a smooth desegregation, supervised the organization of a county-wide bilingual program, and instituted least-restrictive placements for special education students. Always a supporter of professional development and school-based management, Glynn mentored scores of administrators and teachers, always requested a line-item in his budget for staff to attend conventions and seminars, helped develop the “Little School” (school-within-a-school) concept, fostered strong PTA and other parent groups, and expanded his predecessor’s focus on democratic school administration. A Leader Among His PeersAs National Education Association (NEA) Director from Delaware, Glynn delivered a national keynote address and addressed teachers at every school in Delaware. He was also President of the Delaware State Education Association (DSEA), New Castle County Education Association (NCCEA), Marshallton Education Association (MEA), and the Delaware Chief School Officers Association; and a member of the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), the Delaware Association of School Administrators (DASA), and Phi Delta Kappa. Glynn was awarded the Valley Forge Freedoms Foundation Medal, the Hilda Maehling Cup, and the Delaware State Department of Public Instruction award. A Leader in the CommunityGlynn has also been active in community organizations, serving as Vice President of the University of Delaware Education Alumni Association, a Democratic committee member, a eucharistic minister at his church, a member of the “Singing Superintendents,” a member of a “minstrels” group that performs at nursing and retirement homes, and an American Field Service (AFS) faculty advisor. He arranged lodging for foreign students who wanted to study in the U. S. and opened his home to student and adult foreign exchange visitors. Married for 52 years to the former Nancy Glassmire, Glynn and his wife have 3 children and 4 grandchildren. |
